We have been following the one parent one language method with our two children. We currently live in London. I speak Spanish to them and my husband speaks Russian. When we are all together we continue this method since I understand enough Russian and my husband understands enough Spanish to follow the conversation.
Our older child is three and speaks both languages fluently. She is just starting school and her English is improving rapidly. Our youngest will hopefully follow in a similar path. We achieved this by hiring a Russian baby sitter who would help me and provide the language skills since my husband was at work.
When visiting schools we are often asked how we plan to help our children with their homework given our language approach. When they get older, is it okay to switch to another language to help them with their homework during a set time? For example every afternoon for an hour I could review their work in English? Some parents feel that the school will provide all the English they need but I think that is unrealistic. And the school she is attending expects parents to participate and promote the classwork. What do you recommend?
