Hello everyone, I am looking for a good Mandarin School anywhere in the US. I mean a real, Monday-Friday, at least 50% Mandarin, elementary school. Either Public or Private. We are currently living in Hong Kong and are a bit tired of big city life. We are considering returning to the US, to a medium sized city. My son is currently 2.5 and speaks both Mandarin and English. Any advise would be appreciated!

My daughter goes to International School of the Peninsula (ISTP).

I have done extensive research in this area and the top school is probably Meyerholz – Cupertino Language Immersion Program (CLIP).  It is a a public school but REALLY hard to get into – lottery based and almost no attrition.

The academic/language standards are outstanding (far better than both ISTP or CAIS) but the drawbacks are that 1) it is located in Cupertino (too far south for some), 2) too academically competitive (nature of CUpertino), and 3) most children have 1 or more parents who are native speakers (disadvantage to others with non).

Palo Alto is starting a public immersion school at Ohlone.  So it is trying to merge the “crunchiness” of Ohlone with Mandarin. They will have mixed grades (K and 1 together).

A new school has recently started in the San Jose area called Premier Language Academy – I believe it was started by the former head of Meyerholz.  I’ve heard very good things about it – very experiential philosophy that encourages differentiated teaching.

So why are we at ISTP?  well, because frankly we don’t want to move or commute to south bay or to the city (CAIS)

Thanks so much for the information!

Tish, do you happen to have a web address for the Pacific Rim International School? I can’t seem to find much about it. Looks like it might be montessori?

Hi Sara,
We live in Tucson, AZ and there is a new school that is full immersion. The program offers Spanish, French, German and now Mandarin. The name of the school is International school of tucson. The website is http://www.internationalschooloftucson.com. I have a 2 year old daughter and she was placed on the waiting list for next year, I would like her to learn mandarin since I talk to her in Spanish and my husband in English. Thanks. Good luck.

There is a newly approved Mandarin Immersion school – Wei Yu International Charter School, an independent public school with STEAM and project based curriculum. The school will be opened in West San Jose. The effort started out from a group of parents who wanted a Mandarin Immersion public school and there is a high demand but not enough schools offer it. Check it out: http://www.weiyucharter.org. Currently opening for enrollment until end of Feb 2016.
