Hi this is my story. I am a non-native french speaker still learning. I have lessons every week with a native speaker and as I go along I am teaching my children (3 boys). I go to a french playgroup with my youngest 3.5yrs now for 1 year where I speak french for practice and also to hear a good accent. I listen to french radio; my son watches french DVDs; I have a few language exchange email friends and always search out people when I am out and about to speak french with me. It is something I have always wanted to do but I am always looking for inspiration. At the moment I am enquirying into the local bilingual school which we are lucky to have not far from us. My husband is very supportive but sometimes I know he is fed up. My son’s preschool think he needs to see a speech therapist because his speech is a bit delayed but not inaudible. He is going extremely otherwise with all the usual activities. Is there anyone out there doing the same thing as me. I have read all the FAQs and reports on the website I would just like to know that I am doing something worthwhile because sometimes it gets really frustrating. My french is improving slowly all the time. I also read lots of french books to my youngest because he just loves it.

I also forgot to say that we live in Sydney, Australia where although we are a very multicultural society english is still very much the main language and most people have english as their primary language.

Hi,I’m a no-native french speaker. As we moved to Québec ,my husband and I decided to speak in french with our son but we continue to speak Spanish between us. He started speaking a little later than other children, but we are proud that today he is fluent in both languages french and Spanish. Go on!! your effort Will pay off!!

Hi, Thanks so much for your encouragement – we are going well with the french now and have just found out that all our boys (3) can go to the french bilingual school which is close by so I am very pleased about that. It is hard work always but also very rewarding. If you had asked me five years ago if I would be doing something like this I would have said no! I cannot believe what a voyage of discovery this has taken us on and it just gets better. Good luck to you as well. Thanks Kathy x

Hi Cynthia: I am wondering how old your son was when you started speaking French to him. If it was a little later, had he heard the language before or was it an abrupt change for him? Thanks, Ann

Hello devoted moms!
I also have a question for Cynthia :
So you acheved bilingualism with your kids without having to send you kids to the minority immersion local school?
We live in Okotoks, south of Calgary,Canada,English is the main language here and I dont like the immersion school it is run down and far
I’d love to have hope that there other ways to achieve bilingualism with young children
thanks!
