Hi!

My daughter is 4 and attending a local Swiss German kindergarten. I have noticed that she continually asks me, “what mommy?” whensomeone is speaking in German. She speaks Swiss German very well with her father and doesn’t seem to have any trouble understanding when someone speaks directly to her, but she will continually ask for translation when someone is speaking to me in German.

Anyone run into this with their kids? Any suggestions on how to handle the translation (do it, tell her to pay more attention, tell her to ask the person speaking to repeat?) Is this a normal step in language development? Could she also be having difficulty understanding the kindergarten teacher?

Thanks!
